Prompt 4

Reflect on your blog experience. What aspects of it were positive? What suggestions would you make for its implementation in future semesters? What ideas do you have for prompts that would be meaningful to discuss?

I think overall, the blog experience was interesting, but somewhat unorganized. I would have preferred more time to think of answers to some of the prompts. The questions did get me thinking of certain aspects of my life and how I would react to situations in the classroom pertaining to diversity. I would suggest possibly having students work independently next time on some of the questions and together on some as well.

I agree with Alison that overall the blogging exercise was a good one to have had, though perhaps a little disorganized in its implementation. Perhaps a blog is not the most appropriate medium for this type of discussion. I recommend setting up some sort of diversity in education list-serv or discussion group which could function as a forum for education students in programs across the state.

Aside from this sort of logistical consideration, though, I believe that these are incredibly important and stimulating conversations for everyone (not just future educators) to be engaged in. As we have seen with Duke University's lacrosse team debacle, when these issues are NOT discussed, or simply swept under the rug, they can errupt in unexpected and disasterous ways. It is far better to talk openly about our differences in an effort to strengthen the community, than to pretend that differences don't exist, and hope that nothing bad ever happens because of our individual ignorance.

I think the blog experience was positive in general because it did stimulate thinking about our own personal experiences with diversity and how we defined ourselves culturally or racially. I think it would have been more effective if split into smaller groups so discussion is easier. Also, it needed to be a little more organized as far as posting times.

I think that the blog has the potential to become a wonderful addition to the 310 course, but it needs time to work out the kinks and be more organised. I enjoyed talking with my group about the prompts and comments. I think the thing the blog needs most is organisation.

I thought this was a very interesting idea. I do feel I would have obtained more from this if it had been personal. Meaning i wrote my own blog. However, being in groups allowed good group disscussion about certain subjects and also allowed the abilty to talk about other ideas. Also it was a bit disorganized but implementing this earlier on in the semester would fix this problem.
